September 1, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Ryan my 7 year old grand daughter. Her parents let us keep her on Reef Madness for the weekend. \u00a0She is a water baby and prefers the ocean to the Hotel swimming pool at our Marina.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"July 22, 2017. \u00a0HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! \u00a0Happy Birthday to you…<\/span>Happy Birthday “Reef Madness”…<\/span> \u00a0Our trusty Mikelson 43′ \u00a0boat turned 20 years old today. \u00a0We have had her for 10 years and she has never let us down. \u00a0Knock on wood. \u00a0So we took her in for a face lift and some maintenance to the Shelter Island Boat Yard.<\/span> \u00a0Reef Madness is the hull number one of her model introduced by Mikelson Yachts on July 22, 1997<\/span>\u00a0the only hull manufactured in that year.<\/span> \u00a0The Mikelson company celebrated with us<\/span> by posting her birthday on their facebook page. \u00a0We had new bottom paint and striping applied and replaced 10 plastic thru hulls with stainless steel. \u00a0Sid, my almost nephew, fixed one of our fuel pumps and we did engine and generator maintenance. \u00a0She also got a spa treatment including wax and flybridge detail. \u00a0We have an<\/span> extended dive trip to Catalina<\/span> planned in a couple of weeks and we hope<\/span> Reef Madness will look good in Avalon and Two Harbors.<\/span><\/p>\n

July 8, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Went out on Saturday to use our Fisher CZ-21 Metal Detector at the Tower. \u00a0The vis has been so consistently bad that<\/span> Ruth said we are going to have to start practicing our search and recovery techniques<\/span> like our friend Geof Baehr up in San Francisco.<\/span> \u00a0She was joking, but right.<\/span> \u00a0When vis is bad hone your skills for<\/span> diving that does not require good visibility i.e. Macro Photography, Scallop or Lobster Hunting… Metal Detecting!<\/span> \u00a0I was rusty but my detector worked well and I tried out a new shorter arm that I had never had in the water. \u00a0The Tower is not an ideal detecting area due to an abundance of metal crap, but I learned that it is easier to discriminate the tones made by the detector to dig more interesting targets when mostly iron is around. \u00a0I am still looking for tools and the remains of old experiments around and about the Tower from its early days in the 60’s.<\/span> \u00a0I found the main power cable (disconnected) that leads to the Mission Beach which I thought was cool.<\/span><\/p>\n

June 3, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Swapped some emails with my friend Geoff in San Francisco and got hooked up for a<\/span> Great White Shark trip to Guadalupe Island with famous Amos Nachoum wildlife photographer.<\/span> \u00a0His trip is pricey but he only takes 8 people on a 110′ yacht that normally does 16 persons. \u00a0His<\/span> trip stays longer than most.<\/span> \u00a0Ruth did the math and half as<\/span> many divers mean twice as long in the cages and an extra day adds to that total time wet. \u00a0They deploy a surface cage and a deep cage and even<\/span> allow out of cage diving.<\/span> \u00a0I should be able to get some good shots of Ruth out of the cage swimming with killer sharks, maybe she could carry some chum with her? \u00a0As a bonus, Amos instructs and has volunteered to shoot pictures of us while we fear for our lives.\u00a0 The trip is not until November so we are going to be <\/span>p<\/span>repping by shooting big animals in the months ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Went north up the coast to dive to find better vis. \u00a0Did not happen. \u00a0Terrible vis and surge despite flat seas.<\/span> \u00a0Starting to worry about the long term poor conditions San Diego<\/span> has experienced over the last couple of years. \u00a0I thought I was being harsh but<\/span> recent news reports confirm that Mexico is dumping raw sewage and industrial waste into the ocean at our border.<\/span>\u00a0 On another note, I bought a rare 8mm Nikon lens<\/span> for my underwater rig. \u00a0I found out that is not going to work underwater but love the circular effect for surface photos–see inset. \u00a0Coincidentally<\/span> Nikon just came out with an 8-15mm fisheye<\/span> that will work in my case and I pre-ordered it.<\/span><\/p>\n

May 26, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Getting ready to do some local diving this weekend. \u00a0We have heard we can avoid the pollution by going up north to Solana Beach. \u00a0We are desperate to get some underwater time so<\/span> this may be our future for diving San Diego<\/span> away from the Tijuana River and its devastation of the clarity of our water. \u00a0While noodling with Photoshop I compounded two shots of mine from the past. \u00a0One a parrotfish and another a cloudscape from Mammoth last fall. \u00a0I like it and may start a series of misanthropic combos.<\/span><\/p>\n

May 25, 2017.<\/span> Ruth came home with a project for me. \u00a0She brought home a<\/span> 3mm in length Pygmy Squid larva<\/span>\u00a0in a petri dish that scientists<\/span> hatched at the Salk Institute only three days ago<\/span>. \u00a0She thought we should photograph it for possible publication since they are so rare, fragile, and impossible to shoot in the wild at this size. \u00a0It took my<\/span> 105mm Nikon macro lens, a 62mm extension tube,<\/span> and a lot of patience to get a decent shot. \u00a0They swim erratically in every direction making focus or even finding them difficult. \u00a0We also did a short clip of the squid breathing.<\/span><\/p>\n

May 21, 2017. \u00a0Went out Saturday to Point Loma in calm seas–finally. \u00a0However vis was abysmal we could not see 3′ of rope down the anchor chain so we aborted and went to the Plane on Sunday. \u00a0The vis was about 5′ and water temperature at 40′ was 53 degrees. \u00a0The Plane is covered in sand up to the cockpit. \u00a0Only one cannon remains exposed. \u00a0More looting is apparent and there is almost no cockpit left as a result. \u00a0Very sad. \u00a0No pictures due to poor vis again.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"May 12, 2017. \u00a0Once upon a time in 1856, there lived an old diver. \u00a0He hailed from Ocracoke Island, Maine. \u00a0He worked as a diver repairing many wooden-hulled ships for many years. \u00a0He owned a scruffy dog and a hatchet shown in the only photo known to exist of him. \u00a0On one of his repair jobs, in 1913, he died and the Old Diver spoke no more. \u00a0<\/span>“Old Diver, Old Diver What Do You Say…He Says Nothing!”<\/span> \u00a0The townsfolk erected a monument to him where they placed his dive boots on his grave. \u00a0It is said he has haunted the graveyard ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"May 11. 2017.<\/span> \u00a0New OldDiver.com logo has been finalized by 99Design.com. \u00a0I don’t love it but until we design a new one that emphasizes the “old” in Old Diver much better we will live with it. \u00a0If you want a T-Shirt send us an email. \u00a0We are trying to get out locally on the weekends but the surf has been very high. \u00a0In between we are getting ready for Maui again in June so as to not lose our bonus tickets on Alaska Air.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"May 6, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Ruth and I went to the Long Beach Scuba Show. \u00a0We saw some dive shop and tour operators that we have met over the years and some equipment manufacturers that we were familiar with as well. \u00a0Of note to us was a new Austrian DPV motor system called ScubaJet. \u00a0Very compact and powerful but I have found no video wherein they are actually showing a diver being pulled along at any speed. \u00a0We saw the Ultra Light flash arm rep and he sold me some new fine thread clamps for my arms and gave me new “o-rings” for my ball sockets. \u00a0The Show was fun but smaller than I had hoped.<\/span><\/p>\n

April 14-22, 2017. \u00a0Koh Lanta, Thailand. \u00a0Thirty plus hours through LA, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Krabi and a bus ride to Koh Lanta all for less money than a direct flight to Maui from San Diego. \u00a0We loved Thailand but had a hard time figuring out why. \u00a0The diving was okay, the people very nice, our hotel was fantastic, killer food, had one bad dive operator but their replacement was awesome. \u00a0No one thing stood out but all together we came back feeling great about our trip. \u00a0Vis was limited but the medium and small size fish were there. \u00a0Had to shoot a lot of Clown Fish. \u00a0Got a good Mantis Shrimp shot. \u00a0Not much big stuff there. \u00a0Next stop Maui in June.<\/span><\/p>\n

March 19, 2017. \u00a0Took our Whaler out to dive a Steve Lawson recommendation in 109 fsw. \u00a0We went straight out from jetty to the spot where Steve believes a significant find my be. \u00a0Very murky<\/span> despite flat seas. \u00a0No photos due to conditions. \u00a0Water temp was 52 degrees at our maximum depth.<\/span><\/p>\n

March 1-5, 2017. \u00a0Diving Maui, \u00a0from Kihei at the west end of the island. \u00a0Missed one\u00a0out of four days of diving due to a rain storm \u00a0this week. \u00a0The three remaining \u00a0dive days were quite beautiful. \u00a0Did more GoPro \u00a0video than stills but we did get a few shots in of the usual suspects on \u00a0and above the reef.<\/span><\/p>\n

January 22, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Drove the local beaches to do some metal detecting. \u00a0We found some pretty gnarly surf and scary pollution covering our most popular spots. \u00a0Took an evening boat ride into the closed jetty at Mission Beach at the height of the rainstorm to entertain our friends Becky and Dana from the bay window of their luxury condo overlooking Mission Beach. \u00a0We called them on our cell as we were doing donuts in the severe chop, rain, and wind in front of their building. \"\"January 20, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Largest storm of the year is passing through San Diego. \u00a0Five to Seven inches of rain expected over the next three days precludes diving. \u00a0However 14-20 foot waves may make for some good beach metal detecting. \u00a0First week in February Shane, my nine year old grandson will be the next grandchild entering “Grand Pa’s Dive School.” \u00a0He is already good at snorkeling and passed the water treading test last week in the pool. \u00a0Santa brought him some really cool gear including a kid size Ziegle Ranger buoyancy compensator. \u00a0He has a lot of open water snorkeling experience but due to his age we will be doing mostly pool work until his tenth birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"January 17, 2016.<\/span> \u00a0Just ordered my Nemo Underwater Hammer Drill. \u00a0This thing is a cordless power drill and hammer drill that works to a depth of 150 feet. \u00a0As a boater this thing will be fantastic for repairs that may have required a hull out. \u00a0They have a nice angle grinder I am eye balling as well. These tools are useful when we salvage lost anchors and chains. \u00a0I also ordered Nemo’s Commercial Diving Flood Light.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"January 15, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>Went out whale watching with the McNiff family. \u00a0They were real troopers in six foot plus seas. \u00a0Spotted a few whales and the last one gave a little breaching show for six to eight full body leaps. \u00a0It was difficult to handle the swells while trying to maneuver the boat and not spook the whales. \u00a0Beautiful winter day in Southern California.<\/span><\/p>\n

J\"\"anuary 8, 2017.<\/span> \u00a0Went diving today at the NOSC Tower. \u00a0Vis was decent 20+. \u00a0Bugs were scarce but we got one legal. \u00a0Tested new dive computer Shearwater Perdix AI really liked it. Ruth had a major seal failure on her drysuit and was getting hypo-thermic on the boat ride home. \u00a0She took some video during the dive and I printed a single frame adjacent hereto.<\/span><\/p>\n

January 2, 2017. \u00a0Happy New Year! Guess what still in Europe… Zurich to be exact! \u00a0Plane malfunction of two hours made us miss all of our connections. \u00a0No reasonable way home until Wednesday so we are touring the Swiss Alps for two days. \u00a0Not quite as warm as Sicily but we came equipped for snow. \u00a0Zurich today Lucerne tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"\"\"December 26, 2016. \u00a0Visiting Catania on the island of Sicily in Italy. \u00a0Beautiful coast and villages here. \u00a0The food is excellent especially the seafood. \u00a0Have not tried the horse meat fillets yet however. \u00a0We will summit mount Etna tomorrow which is heavily covered in snow at present. \u00a0Etna is still an active volcano and spews gas constantly just like me.<\/span><\/p>\n

October 12, 2016. \u00a0Drove up to Mammoth for our annual fishing trip. \u00a0The trees had all turned to their autumn colors and the fishing was excellent as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n

October 10, 2016. \u00a0Dived the airplane today. It appears that salvage hunters are pulling large items from the cockpit. \u00a0Seat belts, seat and many controls are missing. I had thought the winter storms earlier this year were responsible but it appears now that the larger pieces were intentionally removed. \u00a0Very sad.<\/span><\/p>\n

No lobsters were present which was also unusual.<\/span><\/p>\n

September 25, 2016. \u00a0Getting ready for lobster season Friday at midnight. \u00a0It was \u00a0a little slow last year with all the warm water hoping for more and larger bugs this season. \u00a0Don’t forget your fishing license and lobster log.<\/span><\/p>\n

September 1, 2016. Workload has stabilized so it is back to the water. \u00a0Heading to Grand Cayman again for a week. \u00a0Then our search for military artifacts will continue on our\u00a0return. \u00a0Sneaked away for a little fun driving to the desert in my new BMW M2 on Sunday. \u00a0Blueberry Scones in<\/span> Julian, house hunting in Borrego, Lunch at Harrah’s Casino and drinks at my friend Scott’s Yacht Club by 6 o’clock. \u00a0Went up in a sail plane on the way back in Warner Springs. \u00a0It is amazing what you can do in a day in San Diego County.<\/span><\/p>\n

May 21, 2016. \u00a0Seems like I am combining two of my hobbies together again as I have now setup my metal dector for surf detecting. \u00a0I use a shorty wetsuit and my freediving snorkel gear to detect underwater in the surf. It did not go as badly as I thought for the first time. \u00a0I did not choke on water and I scanned numerous unusually good signals. \u00a0I did not retrieve anything as the surf was six feet high and detecting was easier than retrieving. \u00a0I will try again later this week when the surf goes down a bit. \u00a0If I actually get something I think I am going to be hooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

May 15, 2016. \u00a0Grand kids came down to the boat and “Thumb Balena” went swimming in her mermaid suit. \u00a0Five years old and can swim with her feet tied together.<\/span><\/p>\n
